To the Hebrews – an anchor of hope

In these last days God has spoken to us by His Son

Do you believe God has spoken at “many times and in various ways”?

Do you believe that God still speaks today?

Are you convinced of the certainty of God’s promises spoken?

“We have this hope (in Jesus) as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” Hebrews 6:19

Hebrews: an assignment from on High & an anchor for our Hope

As devoted followers of Jesus Christ we have a high calling of exalting Christ & encouraging Christ followers.

In this letter “to the Hebrews” we discover two major themes:

  • Exalting & expressing Christ’s Supremacy
    1. Exalt His Superiority & Sovereignty as the Savior & eternal Son of God
    2. Express His glorious radiance as the “exact representation” of God.
    3. Elevate His excellent works of redemption, salvation & His unchanging nature.

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

  • Encouraging & equipping Christ-followers to endure suffering
    1. Encourage people to follow Christ fully – skeptics to turn & disciples to trust.
    2. Equip His followers to endure faithfully – move on to maturity.
    3. Exemplify His goodness by drawing near – spur one another on to love & good deeds.

Important themes to discover and demonstrate (living out the supremacy of Jesus):

  1. Sufficiency & Supremacy of Jesus Christ – author of salvation!
  2. Scripture as the penetrating & powerful Word of God – living & active.
  3. Sabbath-rest for the people of God – the promise of entering His rest still stands.
  4. Sacrificial Priesthood of Jesus our High Priest – a high priest able to sympathize with us.
  5. Security for our soul; secure in God’s steadfast promises – an anchor for the soul.
  6. Standing “side by side” one another – we are not of those who shrink back.
  7. Seeking God by faith – these people were still living by faith when they died.
  8. Spiritual growth of His Church – let us leave the elementary truths and go on to maturity.
  9. Suffering & enduring trials – let us run with endurance the race set out for us.

May the God of peace, that Great Shepherd, “equip you with everything good for doing His will, working in us what is pleasing to Him through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever & ever. Amen” – Hebrews 13:21

On Sunday, September 21st we begin this study in Hebrews with a call to “take hold of the anchor of our soul” who is Jesus and to we fix our eyes on Him: “the author and perfector of our faith” – Hebrews 12:2

Desiring to exalt the Name of Jesus & encourage others in Christ,

Pastor Scott
