They pursued it not by faith…stumbled over the stumbling stone

Paul’s theme is righteousness – God’s gift received by faith

Righteousness pursued – barriers to belief:

• Good deeds (law) Rom. 9:30-32; Gal. 3:10-14

Israel pursued a law of righteousness…by works

 

• Good name (reputation) Rom. 9:32-33 & Isaiah 8:11-17

For Israel he will be a stone that causes men to stumble

 

• Good pursuits (zeal) Rom. 10:1-2 & Phil. 3:4-8

Their zeal is not based on knowledge

 

God’s Way: the righteous will live by faith

Habakkuk 2:4; Romans 1:17; 3:22 (believe)
